Macswarm vs MacRun
MacRun and Macswarm answer the same question, where does my coding agent get a Mac, with different shapes. MacRun gives you a machine. Macswarm gives you Pod-hours.
The short version
MacRun rents a dedicated Mac mini by the month: $139 as a GitHub Actions runner or $169 as an always-on agent machine with Claude Code or Codex installed, reached over a private Tailscale network. Macswarm runs Pods on demand: $99 a month for 300 Pod-hours on Pro, each Pod hosting two to three agents with Simulators, destroyed when idle.
Side by side
| Criterion | MacRun | Macswarm |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | One dedicated Mac mini (M6, 16 GB) | A pool of Pods on dedicated Apple silicon Mac minis, two Pods per machine |
| Price | $139 a month (CI runner) or $169 a month (24/7 agent) | Pro $99 a month for 300 Pod-hours, Team $399 for 1,500; extra hours $0.40 or $0.30 |
| Agents at once | What one Mac mini can carry, kept alive by one session | 2 to 3 active agents per Pod, several Pods per developer, 4 or 10 at a time by plan |
| Idle cost | The Mac is yours all month | Zero: Pods stop 10 minutes after the last session |
| Access | Remote Mac over Tailscale; you administer it | No SSH; agents connect through Claude Code or Codex, you watch through the dashboard |
| Setup | Rent, then install and maintain what you need | Nothing to install; connect an environment key or webhook |
| Isolation | One tenant per Mac | Fresh clone per session, never reused across customers |
| Region | US (New Jersey, by third-party listing) | EU (Netherlands) or US |
| Static IP, SLA | None (per MacRun’s own comparison page) | Enterprise: private network to your git host; SLA by contract |
Where the money goes
A solo developer running one agent for a few hours a day uses maybe 60 to 90 Pod-hours a month. On Macswarm that is inside Pro at $99, or Free for the first 3 hours. MacRun’s $169 buys a Mac that is on all month, which only pays off if the agent genuinely works around the clock.
A team of five with two agents each needs five Macs from MacRun, $845 a month, administered by someone. On Macswarm it is Pro with extra hours, or Team at $399 with ten Pods at a time and an audit log.
When MacRun is the better choice
- You want a real Mac you can log into, install anything on and keep state on between sessions.
- One agent should run 24/7 on a machine that is yours, with no idle timeout.
- Your workflow needs persistent disks, custom daemons or software that a fresh-clone model cannot host.
When Macswarm is the better choice
- Several agents per developer, or several developers, without a Mac each.
- Pods that come and go with the work, so idle time costs nothing.
- Isolation by construction: no shared long-lived machine, no credentials left on disk.
- EU hosting, invoice billing, SSO and an audit log for a team.
