MacStadium or Macswarm: a dedicated Mac by the month, or Pod-hours

MacStadium rents whole Apple machines by the month and sells Orka, its macOS virtualization, to enterprises; Macswarm bills Pod-hours for a macOS VM that one developer's Claude Code and Codex agents share. The two answer different questions, and this page says which one answers yours.

Should you rent a MacStadium Mac or use Macswarm Pods?

Rent from MacStadium when you want whole Apple machines you administer, by the month, or Orka to run your own macOS VMs for CI; use Macswarm when Claude Code or Codex sessions need a Mac with Xcode and Simulators for the hours they work, with nothing to administer. MacStadium’s hosted Mac minis run from $109 a month for an M2 with 8 GB to $349 for an M4 Pro with 48 GB, and Mac Studios from $249 to $449; billing is monthly or annual, there is no hourly option and no free trial on individual hosted Macs, and Orka, Mac VDI and bare-metal fleets are priced through sales (macstadium.com/pricing, checked 27 Oct 2026). Macswarm bills Pod-hours: Free is 3 Pod-hours once, Pro $99 a month for 300 with up to four Pods at a time, then $0.40 per extra Pod-hour, Team $399 for 1,500 and up to ten Pods, then $0.30, and Enterprise reserves Macs from $3,000 a month. A Pod is a macOS VM on an Apple silicon Mac mini with the Latest Xcode, three to four pre-booted Simulators, Claude Code, Codex and XcodeBuildMCP, shared by two to three of one developer’s agents, with no SSH, and destroyed ten minutes after its last session; those ten minutes are billed.

Where the money goes

A developer who runs an agent four hours a day for 22 days uses about 90 Pod-hours a month, with the ten-minute shutdowns: inside Pro’s 300 at $99, or $36 as extra hours on a plan already paid for. The cheapest MacStadium Mac mini that month is $109 for an M2 with 8 GB, or $149 for an M4 with 16 GB, whether it works 90 hours or 700, and you keep macOS, Xcode and the runtimes current on it. At 300 or more hours of continuous use the flat fee wins on price: a Pod running a whole 730-hour month would cost $271 on Pro, so an always-on job belongs on a dedicated machine.

A team of five developers who work at the same time needs five MacStadium machines, from $545 a month at the M2 price, administered by someone. On Macswarm, five developers working at once need five Pods, which is Team at $399 with ten Pods at a time and an audit log; Pro’s four Pods at a time only fit if usage is staggered. These are list-price calculations from the pages linked above, not performance benchmarks: a MacStadium month buys one machine’s time, a Pod-hour buys a managed VM with Xcode and Simulators ready.

When MacStadium is the better choice

  • You want whole Apple machines you administer: root, a persistent disk, a dedicated IPv4, your own software on it.
  • A job or an agent should run around the clock on a machine that is yours all month; a Pod is destroyed ten minutes after its last session.
  • You need Mac Studio class hardware, 64 or 128 GB of memory, or a fleet you orchestrate with Orka in MacStadium’s cloud, on premises or through AWS Marketplace.
  • Your CI pipeline runs macOS VMs you build and register yourself; Macswarm has no runner label.
  • An enterprise agreement, annual pricing and net-15 invoicing fit how you buy.

When Macswarm is the better choice

  • Claude Code or Codex sessions that need a Mac with the Latest Xcode and pre-booted Simulators, several agents at once for one developer, and nothing to install or patch.
  • Usage that comes and goes: Pod runtime is billed per second and stops when the Pod is destroyed, with 3 Pod-hours free to try and no card.
  • A team without a Mac each, on one plan with Pods at a time as the only shared limit; an agency keeps one environment per client (Cloud Macs for iOS agencies).
  • Isolation by construction: a fresh clone per Pod, never reused across customers, no credentials left on disk, EU or US chosen per environment.
